TYKERB + capecitabine

Preparing for treatment

Take time to learn about TYKERB® (lapatinib) tablets
Be sure you understand how to take TYKERB with capecitabine according to your doctor's directions. If you have any questions, contact your doctor or nurse. This is important for fighting your cancer.


Tell your doctor

Before you take TYKERB, tell your doctor if you:

  • Have heart problems
  • Have liver problems. You may need a lower dose of TYKERB
  • Have any other medical conditions
  • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. TYKERB can harm your unborn baby. You should not become pregnant while taking TYKERB. Tell your doctor right away if you become pregnant during treatment with TYKERB
  • Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed. It is not known if TYKERB passes into your breast milk. You and your doctor should decide if you will take TYKERB or breastfeed. You should not do both


Tell your doctor about the medicines

Tell your doctor about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements. TYKERB may affect the way other medicines work, and other medicines may affect the way TYKERB works. Especially tell your doctor if you take:

  • Antibiotics and antifungal medicines (used to treat infections)
  • HIV medicines
  • Medicines used to treat seizures
  • Medicines used to treat heart problems or high blood pressure
  • Antidepressants
  • Medicines that reduce stomach acid (antacids)
  • St John’s wort

Talk to your doctor about side effects.

It is important to know that you may experience side effects while taking TYKERB.

Always speak with your doctor or nurse about any side effects you have while taking TYKERB.


oral medicine

TYKERB is an oral medicine

  • Take 5 tablets of TYKERB all at once, one time a day, every day (unless your doctor directs otherwise)
  • You take TYKERB by mouth with a glass of water every day
  • Do not crush, break, or chew tablets
  • You can take TYKERB at home or wherever you happen to be—you don't need to go to the doctor’s office or clinic
  • Take TYKERB on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after a meal)
  • Do not eat or drink grapefruit products during treatment with TYKERB. Grapefruit may increase the amount of TYKERB in your blood
  • If you miss a dose of TYKERB, take your next dose at your regular time the next day. Do not take 2 doses at 1 time
  • If you take too much TYKERB, call your doctor or go to the nearest hospital emergency room right away

When taking TYKERB with capecitabine:

  • Take your prescribed dose of TYKERB all at once, once a day, every day
  • Your doctor will tell you the dose of capecitabine you should take and when you should take it
  • Take TYKERB on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after a meal)
  • Take capecitabine with food or within 30 minutes after food
  • Take TYKERB and capecitabine exactly as instructed by your doctor; your doctor may change your dose of TYKERB or capecitabine if needed
  • Talk to your doctor if you have any questions about your treatment or experience any side effects
